Chegaga Wilderness Expedition
Overview
Escape into the remote Sahara on this 3-day journey from Marrakech to the majestic Chegaga dunes — Morocco's largest and most pristine desert dunes, untouched by mass tourism. Cross the spectacular High Atlas Mountains, explore ancient kasbahs, ride camels into the golden sunset, and spend a magical night under a blanket of stars in an authentic desert camp.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Departure early morning from Marrakech.
Cross the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka Pass (2,260m).
Visit the iconic Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and famous filming location for Gladiator and Game of Thrones.
Continue to Ouarzazate, the 'Hollywood of Africa,' and then drive to Zagora via the spectacular Draa Valley — Morocco's longest palm oasis with traditional Berber villages (~7 hours total driving).
Dinner and overnight in a traditional riad or hotel in Zagora.
Day 2
Early breakfast, then continue south through the desert plains to M'Hamid, the last village before the dunes.
Board camels for an unforgettable ride into the Chegaga Desert — Morocco's largest dunes reaching up to 300m high, witnessing a spectacular sunset over endless golden waves of sand.
Enjoy traditional Berber dinner around the campfire with live drumming and music, stargazing in one of the darkest skies in Morocco, and overnight stay in an authentic desert camp.
Experience the magic of sleeping under a star-filled sky in the heart of the Sahara.
Day 3
Wake up early for a spectacular sunrise over the dunes.
Return by camel to M'Hamid village for breakfast and a short rest.
Drive back through the scenic Draa Valley, visiting kasbahs and palm groves along Morocco's longest river.
Cross the High Atlas Mountains again via Tizi n'Tichka Pass (2,260m) to reach Marrakech by evening (~8 hours total driving).
